Designing Batter & Bloom at Polaris: From Concept to Community Impact

Every project begins with an idea—but the ones that stay with you are the ones that grow into something bigger than design.

Batter & Bloom began with a vision.

Located in the heart of Woodlawn, the space was created to expand food access while empowering the next generation of food entrepreneurs through education, mentorship, and opportunity.

At A. Logan Designs, we were honored to help bring that vision to life. From concept development and space planning to graphics, signage, and styling, every design decision was rooted in one central idea:

Before anything blooms, there is becoming.

A Place With Purpose

POLARIS BHM was founded on the belief that Birmingham's entrepreneurs, creatives, and changemakers deserve a place to build, connect, and grow. Having previously designed the POLARIS environment, our team understood the mission behind the organization and the role Batter & Bloom would play within it.

More than a retail space, Batter & Bloom was envisioned as a place where entrepreneurship, community, and opportunity come together.

The Before…

Looking at the finished space today, it's difficult to imagine where the project began.

The existing environment offered a blank canvas, but it also required thoughtful planning to transform it into a destination that felt welcoming, inspiring, and connected to the mission behind the brand.

The Concept: Built to Bloom

The concept for Batter & Bloom was inspired by growth.

From the beginning, we wanted the space to reflect the journey from idea to opportunity. Just as batter becomes something more through time, care, and intention, entrepreneurs grow when they are given the resources and support to thrive.

Warm materials, natural textures, and organic elements were used throughout the space to reinforce themes of cultivation, community, and transformation.

Translating Concept Into Materiality

Chosen Materials Palette

Once the conceptual direction was established, we began translating those ideas into materials, finishes, and color.

The palette balances warmth and sophistication while remaining approachable and inviting.

Deep greens evoke growth and renewal. Natural wood tones bring warmth and authenticity. Brass accents introduce refinement, while layered textures create visual depth throughout the space.

Together, these selections help tell the story of nourishment, cultivation, and transformation.

Every finish was selected intentionally to support both the mission and the experience of the space.

More Than Interior Design

One of the most meaningful aspects of this project extended beyond furnishings and finishes. Our team had the opportunity to help develop the Batter & Bloom Declaration of Purpose graphic. It communicated the deeper meaning behind Batter & Bloom and its connection to POLARIS.

Its message reflects the journey of growth, reminding visitors that every dream, business, and opportunity begins with a foundation. Rooted in the mission of Batter & Bloom, the installation serves as a daily reminder that growth takes time, support, and the courage to begin.

More than a design feature, it reflects the purpose and values at the heart of the space.

From Concept to Construction

Bringing Batter & Bloom to life was a true team effort.

Working alongside Alycia Levels Moore, our team helped bring the vision for Batter & Bloom to life, creating a space that reflects the mission and impact of both Batter & Bloom and POLARIS BHM.

With the collaboration of Lyles Construction and 1Connect, the vision began to take shape. From custom millwork and lighting to graphics, furnishings, and final styling, each element helped bring Batter & Bloom to life.

As construction progressed, what once existed as concepts and renderings gradually transformed into a welcoming space rooted in purpose and community.

What began as a vision is now a place where community, entrepreneurship, and opportunity come together.

Designed to support both emerging food entrepreneurs and the Woodlawn community, Batter & Bloom reflects the mission at the heart of POLARIS BHM while creating an environment that feels welcoming, inspiring, and connected.

Opening Day

Seeing the space filled with people for the first time was a rewarding reminder of why design matters.

With community members, supporters, entrepreneurs, and guests gathered to celebrate, the opening of Batter & Bloom marked the beginning of a new chapter for Woodlawn and the people it was created to serve.

For our team, it was an honor to be part of a project rooted in purpose, growth, and community impact.
